The Stashline Compression Sack started as a way to keep boot covers from taking over a pack. It ended up being the thing that lives in the bottom of the bag all season.

Five liters, 2.9 ounces. Roll your Frostlines into it, cinch the drawcord, then pull the four straps down over the top. That's the part a plain stuff sack can't do — strapped all the way down it gives you back about a liter and a half of pack space, which is the difference between a pack that closes and a pack you're kneeling on at the trailhead.

Four straps instead of two, which is what most sacks this size come with. Pressure goes on evenly, so the load stays square instead of squeezing out one side and going lopsided on you halfway up the mountain.

It's not just a boot cover bag. A puffy compresses down in it, so does a lightweight outer layer, and so does the pile of soft goods that never has a home in your pack.

The handle on top is the detail you'll appreciate at 5 a.m. Reach into your pack with a glove on and grab a webbing loop instead of fishing around for a handful of slick fabric in the dark. Small thing. You notice it every single time.

That handle and the straps work outside the pack too. Clip it to the outside when the inside is full, or hang it off a gear strap once you're set up — digging through a pack while you're hanging in a saddle is a pain, and a layer within arm's reach isn't.

210D ripstop nylon in military green — the same weight of fabric pack builders use for the parts that take abuse. It holds up to being crammed in and dragged back out every sit for a whole season.

On water, straight answer: it sheds light rain and frost off the top of your pack. It is not a dry bag. If you're walking in through real weather, line it or put it inside something that is.
